What’s New in Courchevel?

New in Courchevel for Winter 2017-18

It’s June, but despite the glorious sunshine and high temperatures, the focus on the slopes of Courchevel is definitely 100% winter! Some big changes are afoot, there’s a lot of digging going on, especially on the slopes of Courchevel Moriond (otherwise known as 1650). Here’s what’s new in Courchevel for next winter:

A 3000m toboggan run!

We absolutely can’t wait to have a go at this… Imagine flying down a 3km track with 450m vertical descent, 4 tunnels, Monaco-style turns and Le Mans straights… The ‘Luge XXL’ will run from the top of the new Courchevel Moriond bubble lift all the way down into the village and will also run in the evenings with floodlighting. See you at the top!

Brand new 1650 Moriond gondola

The original Courchevel 1650 Ariondaz bubble lift was built in 1974 and took 10.5 minutes. The replacement will take less than 7 minutes and will be super slick and efficient, carrying 2400 skiers and snowboarders per hour in 8-person bubbles. The bubbles will be extra comfortable and use tubular pylons instead of electricity-pylon style supports as previously.

New in Courchevel Moriond 2017-2018

These new developments will be backed up by extra snow-making equipment which will ensure coverage all the way down into resort. In addition, some of the pistes will be re-shaped to make the steeper areas of the blue runs easier for beginners. These improvements in Courchevel Moriond amount to an investment of €19million.

Here at Alpine Escape HQ we have been very excited to announce 2 self-catered chalets in Courchevel Moriond, which is a new location for us. They both have fantastic locations with easy access to both the lifts and the huge choice of shops, bars and restaurants of Moriond as well as easy access to lots of activities including the new Aquamotion swimming centre which has a beauty treatment centre, wakeboarding zone and fabulously relaxing spa area.

New lifts and slopes in the Three Valleys

Meribel Mottaret:

The two Roc de Tougne drag lifts that link to the new Combes 2 chair will be replaced by a detachable 6-seater chairlift that will speed 2400 skiers per hour up the 400m ascent. This one cost a cool €6.3million.

Val Thorens:

Around the Folie Douce area there will be a new piste called ‘Retour Sud’ which will provide an alternative route into Val Thorens. The 4-seater Moraine chairlift which provides access to the Col chair and the viewpoint at the Glacier de Thorens is being replaced by a new 10-seater gondola which costs €13million and takes 2800 skiers per hour.
