LE PRAZ… THE VILLAGE

Imagine rooftops blanketed in snow, fairy lights twinkling in the trees and elegant restaurants set among rustic cobbled streets… Courchevel Le Praz is pretty as a picture.

The vibe in Le Praz is that of an authentic mountain resort with homes and chalets mingled together creating a lovely, welcoming atmosphere. The many French tourists and locals who live in Le Praz mean that you’re more likely to need your ‘bonjours’ and ‘mercis’ than elsewhere in Courchevel.

There are lovely places to enjoy a civilised coffee, a lingering lunch or a glass of wine or two, and there’s regular live music, a sports bar and you’re spoilt for choice on the restaurant front with some excellent options for the chalet night off.

You can’t fail to notice the Olympic torch and towering ski jumps in Le Praz. Constructed for the Albertville 1992 Winter Games, they’re a great focal point and you can often see the athletes in training.

Le Praz is also home to some lovely cross country ski routes with gentle gradients. If you’ve never tried ‘Ski de Fond’ before and would like to take a morning or afternoon to have a go, we’d highly recommend it for the opportunity to appreciate the mountain setting at a more peaceful pace. (Our concierge can help you to organise this during your stay.)

What’s on?

Among the village’s winding streets you’ll find all sorts of welcoming watering-holes. Under the vaulted ceilings of Cave des Lys you’ll find an extensive wine list and delicious tapas. On a sunny afternoon don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy one of the best vin chauds in the resort on the terrace of the Peupliers hotel.

For sports and a pint, Brit-run Drop Inn is a popular spot for apres-ski. If you can summon up the energy for late night dancing, the pizzeria L’Escorchevel has all the best local bands. For detailed information on the local restaurants, check out our Where to Eat and Drink page.

If you’re not a skier, you can still appreciate the snowy mountains and stunning views. Le Praz has some lovely walks in the surrounding areas, and with a pedestrian lift pass you can also travel up the gondola to 1850 to wander around the shops and see the sights.

Away from the bars, you’ll notice regular paragliders elegantly landing in Le Praz near the lift station, especially on warmer days. Tandem paragliding is a gentle and beautiful way to enjoy the scenery and we’d certainly recommend it to take in the stunning views from above the peaks.

Getting around…

Access to the gondola and high-speed chair is easy from Chalet Dulcis Casu; just a short walk along the footpath around the lake takes you to the lifts and up into the mountains where you can explore the slopes of Courchevel 1850 and beyond into the whole Three Valleys.

Courchevel Le Praz has a nursery slope and drag lift, and our driver will happily take beginner skiers up to 1550 to catch the bubble up to 1850 where there is great beginner level skiing and many ski school options.

Skiing back to Le Praz is via a choice of forested red runs, from, although again it’s easy to use the buses if you fancy finishing your day in another part of the resort.

The free buses – ‘navettes’ – run between La Tania and Le Praz, Courchevel, Moriond and Courchevel Village and skiers and pedestrians can use them from early morning until late in the evening. The Mairie de Saint Bon website has a link to a PDF version of the timetable.
